Housing
The Program has had the University set aside a contingent of rooms in its secure and recently renovated halls of residence, Homes Groningen, Uppsala, Göttingen and Canterbury. The cost for 2014-2015 is € 407 / month (this sum includes all utilities, such as electricity, heating, water, internet, etc.). Student staying 12 months pay €375/month. Please check the university's webpages for the most up-to-date information.
International students will be given precedence for university-owned housing, since others will find it easier to investigate the excellent alternatives offered by the private market. Room prices there vary between € 275 and € 475 / month. Keep in mind that you will be required to pay a deposit of one to three months' rent when you start renting the room, and that the cost of maintenance and of utilities (such as broadband internet) may be charged extra. You will find an overview of rooms that have been inspected and approved by the City of Ghent and the Fire Department via the website of Kot@Gent

Other practical matters
Please note that tuition is to be paid at the start of classes. Tuition covers UGent's central registration fee, all classes and examinations, the thesis, institutional membership in the American Studies Association (ASA), and individual membership in Belgium's American Studies Association (BLASA).
In addition, you will have to foresee certain study costs, such as books and other study materials. The university provides an estimate of such expenses and of the total cost of living here.
Some grants for study in Belgium exist, usually nationality-based. For instance, US citizens can compete for one of four Fulbright grants for study in Belgium. The application process for the 2015/16 academic year opens May 1, 2014, and closes October 15, 2014 (to be confirmed). Students can also apply for admission to the Program in the framework of Erasmus Mundus (EM Action 2 Partnership), including Basileus.
