Internship
The internship can be taken as a 10-credit course within the program. It then substitutes for two of the elective courses, so students will take just one elective course, plus the internship, which will take up 200 hours (= 25 workdays, which need not be consecutive). This for-credit internship will be assessed on the basis of a 5,000-word report (estimated preparation time in addition to the internship itself: 60 hours or about a week and a half), submitted by the student in time for the exam session in which s/he aims to graduate. The internship supervisor will also be asked to provide a brief report on the student's performance.
It is also possible to add an internship to the full MAAS program, after having completed all of the program's 60 credits (including three elective courses). This plan is particularly suitable for EU students who would like to undertake an internship in the United States. Visa regulations for internships in the US stipulate that candidates need to either be enrolled at an educational institution outside the US, or have graduated from such an institution within the past twelve months.

Internships in Belgium include opportunities at Education USA/Fulbright Belgium (see interview with an intern here), at the Center for American Studies of the Royal Library, Brussels, and at the Red Star Line Museum, Antwerp. The MAAS staff help its students to prepare and submit their applications to the official NATO and EU internship programs as well. Students applying for the NATO internships should be aware that the annual deadline is in the spring, while the internship program starts either in March or September of the following year. As regards the EU, there are two main programs, with different deadlines and starting dates. July is the deadline for the European Commission Traineeship, which starts in between March and July. The European Parliament Traineeship lasts five months and has two possible slots: the first application period goes from August 15 to October 15 for programs running between March and July; the second application period goes from March 15 to May 15 for programs running between October and February. The MAAS staff also reviews applications for internship programs offered by several official U.S. agencies based in Belgium. The U.S. Mission at the EU, for instance, offers programs that are intended for both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens. Application deadlines and internship periods vary depending on the specific program. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers internships only to U.S. citizens, but the U.S. Commercial Service at the U.S. Mission to the European Union offers programs to Belgian students or international students who are enrolled in Belgian universities, and can usually accept one or two MAAS interns.
