The Black Atlantic: : The African Diaspora in Literature and Culture

Course description: This course explores the Black Atlantic through literature and criticism by (mainly) anglophone black authors writing from Africa, Europe and the Americas. Topics covered include the triangular slave trade, the abolition movement, racism, negritude, pan-Africanism, transnationalism, black feminism, and ... hiphop. This year special attention will be paid to the genre of the neo-slave narrative, a contemporary fictional genre ranging from historical fiction over satire to more experimental modes of writing.
Teaching method: Lectures and class discussions
Evaluation: Class participation and presentation, incl. revision of ppt. after class discussion (50%); final paper (50%)
